World Cup Fun for Kids

The 2006 soccer World Cup is being held in Germany, and all around the world people old and young, male and female will be looking forward to a feast of football. Whether you love or loathe the 'beautiful game' you can make the World Cup both a fun and educational experience for your kids! There are 32 countries competing in the World Cup 2006, so take the opportunity to find out more about some of the countries which are competing.

1) Geography: Get out an atlas or globe and find out the capital cities of all the competing nations (you can check the full list of teams at FIFA's website) and which continent each country is in.

2) Art: Try and make drawings of the national flags of the countries taking part. Some will be easier than others! Many, such as France, Italy and Holland, are simple and so are good choices for younger children. Countries such as Saudi Arabia, Angola or Ecuador will be more of a challenge!

3) Cookery: Try out some national dishes from competing nations. You may know you like Mexican food or Pasta from Italy, but how about trying some Sushi from Japan or Couscous from Tunisia? And you could always have some good old Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding from England.

4) Costume: Dress up in the national and ethnic costumes of competing nations - how about a Spanish flamenco outfit, a grass skirt from the Ivory Coast or a Japanese Kimono?

5) Sport: Get a football out and have a kick around - especially if you've been sitting in front of the TV all week!

Of course a big part of the fun of a major sporting event such as the World Cup is following a team, so persuade your children to randomly choose a team (not your own national team if they have reached the finals!). Then help them to become a mini expert on that country so as they can then cheer on 'their' team with a little bit of background knowledge of that nation. They could find out about the customs of the country, the language, the teams top players and whether soccer is a major sport in that country.

If Holland Wins FIFA World Cup 2010 Which Players Will Do it For Them?

For Holland's legion of home fans, the title of this article should read "When Holland Win..." That is the kind of expectation generated, after their 8-0 record in the qualifiers. But given the quality of opposition they faced, the question should be, "Can Holland Win FIFA World Cup 2010?"

Because, to win the title, Holland will have to beat the likes of Spain, Brazil, Argentina and England. Unlike in the qualifiers, they won't get soft rivals like Norway, Macedonia and Scotland. Although in group E, Japan and Cameroon are not expected to cause them any bother. Denmark could spring a surprise, when the teams meet on June 14. That said, coach Bert van Marwijk must be credited for putting together a team comprising some world class players who have played great football in the last few years.

If Holland decide to confound the cynics, and go on to win the Cup, which players can they rely on?

Maarten Stekelenburg in goal conceded just 2, in 8 qualifying matches, and is in great shape. Stekelenburg, 27, who took charge from Van der Sar, will find comfort in a back field full of experience, in Giovanni van Bronckhurst and Andre Ooijer.

In midfield, Wesley Snider's great vision and passing skills is just what the doctor ordered. Snider worked his way into form with Inter Milan after having to make way for Ronaldo and Kaka at Real Madrid.

Arsenal's Robin van Persie is a potent threat and Holland will bank heavily on him to score the goals they will need against the big teams, alongside the much accomplished Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

That brings us back to the original question: will Holland bring back memories of Cruyff's Total Football, or will they just fade, with a proverbial whimper?

2010 FIFA World Cup Teams - Uruguay

Uruguay will be playing in its 11th FIFA World Cup in 2010 in South Africa. Uruguay hosted and won the first FIFA World Cup tournament in 1930. Uruguay also won the 1950 FIFA World Cup in Brazil (beating the hosts by 2 goals to 1 in the final). Uruguay also played in the 1997 FIFA Confederations Cup tournament in Saudi Arabia and finished in 4th place. Uruguay is currently ranked at number 19 on the FIFA rankings. Uruguay have played in 40 Copa America tournaments. They competed in the competition for the first time in 1916 and have won the Copa America trophy 14 teams over the years.

The Uruguay national football team has 3 nicknames, "Charrúas", "La Celeste Olímpica" (The Olympic Sky Blue) and La Celeste (The Sky Blue). The current head coach of the Uruguay national football team is Oscar Tabárez. This former player has been managing football teams in Europe and South America since 1980. He took up the Uruguay coaching position in 2006 after a spell of 4 years at Argentinian football club Boca Juniors. Rodolfo Rodríguez is the most capped Uruguayan footballer in history. He played for Uruguay in 79 matches between 1976 and 1986. He does not have a single goal behind his name because he played in the goalkeeper position. Héctor Scarone is the highest scoring Uruguayan footballer in history. He scored 31 goals for his country in 52 matches between 1917 and 1932. He was also the manager for Real Madrid (in Spain) between 1951 and 1952.

Uruguay achieved its biggest win in footballing history in 1927 when the team beat fellow South Americans Bolivia by 9 goals to 0. The country suffered its biggest loss in footballing history in 1902, losing by 6 goals to 0 against Argentina. Uruguay will be one of the teams to watch in the 2010 FIFA World Cup in my opinion. They should not be underestimated. They should make it into the last 16 stage of the competition. Uruguay will play in the following 3 group matches in 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa:

  • 11 June 2010 - Uruguay vs France @ Cape Town Stadium - Kickoff at 20:30

  • 16 June 2010 - Uruguay vs South Africa @ Loftus Versfeld Stadium, Pretoria - Kickoff at 20:30

  • 22 June 2010 - Uruguay vs Mexico @ Royal Bafokeng Stadium, Rustenburg - Kickoff at 16:00

FIFA World Cup 2010 - Amazing Facts You Might Not Know

The Federation Internationale de Football Association proudly brings the FIFA World Cup to the soccer world every four years. The men's national football teams of many countries vie to take part in this esteemed event. A nation that plays football must first qualify for the qualifier matches that are held prior to the big event if they want to qualify. As of now 32 teams are chosen for the competition that lasts for one month.

The 19th FIFA World Cup Series will be organized and launched in South Africa, taking place from June 11th until July 11th, 2010. The first African nation to hold the World Cup is going to be South Africa. Zakumi, the event's mascot, is an adorable leopard-like cartoon animal with green hair and a yellow body. A perfect slogan was selected to suit this occasion: "Zakumi's game is Fair Play."The matches will be played over a one-month period in ten different venues. Much money has been spent on building five new football stadiums, and additional moneys have been spent on renovating five old stadiums.  The renovation work is going on in the following locations:

Port Elizabeth: Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium
Durban: Moses Mabhida Stadium
Johannesburg: Ellis Park Stadium
Cape Town: Cape Town Stadium
Pretoria: Loftus Versfeld Stadium
Bloemfontein: Free State Stadium
Nelspruit: Mbombela Stadium
Polokwane: Peter Mokaba Stadium
Rustenburg: Royal Bafokeng Stadium
Johannesburg: Soccer City

The public will greatly benefit from the construction of new roads and the improvement of transportation services.

An incredible number of fans are expected to arrive in South Africa before the opening ceremonies even begin because the FIFA World Cup Series is, without a doubt, a major event for all football enthusiasts. There are four groups in this year's world cup in which the 32 nations are divided into for the competition.

Group A consists of the following: Action will take place in the folllowing venues: Spain, the Netherlands, England, Brazil, South Africa, Italy, Germany and Argentina.

Group B consists of the following: Ghana, Nigeria, Uruguay, Cameroon, Algeria, Cote d'Ivoire, Paraguay, Chile,

C Group: Korea DPR, Australia, Japan, Honduras, United States, Korea Republic, New Zealand,Mexico.

Fourth group: (Denmark, France, Greece, Portugal, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland)

The last match will happen on July 11, 2010 and the beginning and ending ceremonies for this event will be done on a big scale with various popular celebrities and performers participating in these celebrations.

FIFA World Cup 2010 - Team Profile Germany

Germany's 6th place in the FIFA world rankings does scant justice to their pedigree and record that includes three World Cups won, in 17 appearances, the last one coming in 1990. But Germany's history in recent years has been a case of missed opportunities, whether at World Cups 2006 and 2002, or at Euro 2008.

In the qualifiers, however, the European giants performed to potential, twice putting it across Russia, apart from dismissing Wales, Liechtenstein and Azarbaijan.

The man to watch is Miroslav Klose, a crafty striker, with a prolific scoring record. Pudolski, midfielder-cum-striker, is another great prospect. Tragically, Germany have lost their star midfielder and captain, Michael Ballack, to injury, on the eve of the World Cup. They have another talented midfielder in Bastian Schweinsteiger, who will be under greater pressure of expectation, in Ballack's absence. They also have a great defender in Phillip Lahm. But German fans will lament the absence of Torsten Frings, from the line-up.

However, Germany should have little trouble heading their group D, the other teams being Serbia, Ghana and Australia. In fact, Germany hold a record of sorts, of not losing a single group game, from 1986 onwards.

Their first real challenge should be in the quarter-final, in the form of Argentina. If they survive Argentina, Germany are likely to run into Italy, in the semi-final. In Ballack's absence, Germany seem beset by an unsurmountable problem. But don't write them off; like true champions, they are given to rising to the big occasions.

Belgium

Did you know- The host country's team placed first at the VII Olympic Games in the early 1920s. Since then, Belgium became the fourth European team to win the international title. The national squad won all its matches. In the gold-medal game, the local team defeated Czechoslovakia 2-0. Fifty-two years on, Belgium, the host country, came third in the European Championship.

By 1912, the Danish Olympic team also won the silver medal in Stockholm, Sweden, outpacing the Netherlands, Finland, Russia, Norway, and Finland. In the semi-finals, Denmark routed Holland 4-1. In the gold medal match, Denmark lost to Britain 4-2.
