The countdown to the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa has begun in earnest and the spotlight begins to fall on the venues as soccer fans from around the world check out the destinations from where their favoured teams begin the adventure which they all hope will lead to the Final in Johannesburg's Soccer City on July 11th.

"Jabulani" (1/5): Kaka, Alonso, Ballack & Lampard Interviews [HQ]

Kaka, Xabi Alonson, Michael Ballack, Frank Lampard and Petr Cech all testing the new adidas Jabulani Ball - the official match ball of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Translations: Real Madrid: Kaká It is cool. The first impression is good. The colours of South Africa, a funky pattern on the ball. Cool. Well done! Talk about the name of the ball Kaká: The name of the ball is Jabulani; I just don't know what it means. Interviewer: Celebration! Kaká: It is great. So, I wish a good celebration for everyone. I think that this World Cup will be once again a big event for the whole world, so many people will celebrate, have a party, enjoy their countries, their players. So I feel it is an appropriate name to be used in such an event as the World Cup. Real Madrid: Xabi Alonso Well it seems to be a football exactly for for South Africa, with all these in terms of design it has these African tribal circles. Also it seems to me that it's a very fast football. I am positive that it will score spectacularly fast goals, and this will provide a great spectacle of football. It's quite natural and comfortable, it's a very light football and I think it'll be very fast. It's looking good, and I'm sure that all footballers will enjoy this ball in the world Cup. I pretty sure it'll be amazing. Chelsea: Michael Ballack Good on the foot goes exactly where I want it. No really, it's really cool. What do you think about the ball after trying it out? Well, first thing, it's got fantastic grip, so when ...

Marketing Lessons From The World Cup

The month long spectacle of the quadrennial Football word cup culminated in South Africa after much fanfare and gaiety last week. The tournament as a whole was a great success thanks to the hosts who took to the event in such a huge manner that the festive atmosphere that prevailed truly reflected the rainbow nation in its true colors. Though there was much to crow about the successful event, the first in the African continent, a lot of things could've been done better. Let's look at the some of the lessons that we can learn from this event from a marketing angle.

Ignore Technology at your own peril: I know that my English friends would still be sulking about Lampard's disallowed goal. Whether that decision would have made a significant impact on the outcome of the match is indeed debatable. I have my doubts as I feel that Germany was a much better side on the day and they thoroughly deserved the win.

Disallowed Goal

But what is beyond debate is the fact that the simple use of technology could've avoided the issue altogether and everyone would have been happy with the final result had it been the case. And the winner would've been pleased that their win did   not get sullied in the controversy.

Marketing Takeaway - Don't get overawed by technology as it's a great enabler.

Don't alter crucial factors close to the event: The tricks that the ball (Jabulani) played in adversely affecting the games as a spectacle as well for players could've been avoided had they not left the choice of balls to be used till the very last moment.

Marketing takeaway - Trust the tried and tested tools when the stakes are high.

Don't go overboard with the scarcity card: Well before the first whistle blew or the sound of Vuvuzela was heard, FIFA had announced that the most of the tickets had been sold. But in hindsight, the claim that 97% of tickets were sold before the tournament began seemed hardly credible as made conspicuous by swathes of empty seats at the stadia. Did they put off the potential buyers by playing the scarcity card excessively? Well, the evidences seem to suggest so.

Marketing takeaway - Be moderate and credible with claims as it may put off prospective customers otherwise.

Know your market: One of the basics of marketing is to know your target audience and the organizers made a basic error in judgement in this aspect. There was a huge drop in the ticket sales over the internet, since majority of the football fans in Africa don't have access to internet and the payment options online. Africa isn't Europe and what worked in the previous world cup obviously didn't work this time as the market has changed.

Marketing takeaway - Choose to go online or offline based on the audience

Greed isn't a virtue: The exorbitant pricing of the packages - travel, accommodation and ticketing aimed to squeeze out the maximum from the ardent faithfuls was met with strong negative response from all around. And instead of making it an affordable proposition for the multitude of fans, the sheer greed on the part of the stage managers fended them off big time.

I'm sure that the cricket fans would nod their heads in agreement on how the West Indies bungled on the same in the world cup that they hosted in 2007 but did well to quickly learn from that mistake in time for World T20 two years later. Hope that Brazil can take a leaf out of their books in time for 2014.

Marketing takeaway - When you're working with a massive market, the prices ought to be competitive

World Cup Party

But for all the marketing slip ups and hiccups, what cannot be missed was the joi de vivre that was on display in ample measure. Let's capture that spirit of joy and happiness in our marketing efforts as well.

Waka Waka folks..!!

Manchester United V Liverpool - The World's Biggest Football Rivalry

For many years Liverpool FC have held the title as the most successful club in England thanks to their record breaking 18 First Division/Premier League titles. However in recent years Manchester United have had a long run of constant success and now tie with Liverpool's record of 18 League titles thanks to their Premier League title for the 2008/09 season.

Manchester and Liverpool are both in the North West of England and are situated approximately 34 miles apart, with the M62 motorway the easiest way to get between the two cities.

The rivalry between inhabitants of both cities transcends Football and is part of the culture, and originally stems from the Industrial revolution period of the late 1800's and early 1900's. Liverpool's port was large and brought in huge amounts of ships and cargo providing jobs and wealth to the area. As Manchester floundered they decided to build the Manchester ship canal that linked the city of Manchester with the Irish sea. Whilst this brought prosperity and jobs to Manchester it caused unemployment in Liverpool and much resentment.

On the footballing side Manchester United were the first team to lift the European Cup in 1968 under the stewardship of the legendary Scottish manager Sir Matt Busby. Liverpool did not win the European Cup until the 1970's but have now won the trophy 5 times to United's 3 times.

Whilst the 1970's and 1980's were most definitely Liverpools glory period of success, the 1990's and 2000's were Man Utd's glory period of success. Liverpool have now gone 19 years without winning the League title in England.

During the 2008/09 Premier League season Liverpool did the double over Man Utd, beating them 2-1 at Anfield and 4-1 at Old Trafford, it was Liverpool's best league campaign in years but they still came up short as United won the league by four points.

Games between the sides are fiercely fought occasions and tickets for these games are very hard to get hold of due to the extremely high demand, if you are not a season ticket holder the only way to get one is to use a reputable ticket agent.

Is Cristiano Ronaldo Becoming Like Thierry Henry?

Thierry Henry is probably the best ever foreigner to have plied his trade in the premiership and is definitely the most exciting. He scored a lot of great goals and even more crucial goals for Arsenal as went on to become the club's highest ever goalscorer.

The 1 big criticism of him and this has blighted his career is his tendency to go missing in big games. He has done it so many times for Arsenal and France and at Barcelona, most of his good performances and they have not being many have been against weak opposition.

The 1st time I witnessed Ronaldo in action was when he came on for his Manchester United debut against Bolton Wanderers and his impact was immediate and incredible. I was so impressed that I called a friend of mine who is an avid United supporter to tell him that a star was indeed born.

Even though Ronaldo had his critics in England with a lot of people saying he showboats way too much and his case was style over substance, I never felt that this was true as I have always been a fan of those players that bring something else to the field of play.

He was impressive not only against modest opposition but as he displayed for Portugal in the Euro2004, he was quite capable of taking up the mantle of Luis Figo and producing superb displays irrespective of the opposition.

This trend continued through to the world cup 2006 where he was impressive before he was kicked on the thigh quite brutally by Holland's Kahlid Boulahrouz.

Then came the 2006/2007 season where he conquered all before him and I was totally convinced that he was the best player in the world with superb displays in the league and his performances against Roma, especially in the 1st leg, when United were playing with 10 men, were just superb. It then started to change a little bit as he was ineffective against AC Milan in the semi-finals but I put that down to amount of respect that Milan paid him by putting Gennaro Gattuso on his case.

He continued that in the FA Cup final against Chelsea but I put that down to tiredness and gave him the benefit of the doubt. But I started to become sceptical this season because even though he has scored a remarkable 30 goals in his last 31 games for United, Ronaldo has been anonymous in all the big names this season.

He was not that effective against Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool and in the champions' league, he was invisible against Lyon in both ties.

His critics have been saying it for a long time that he only performs well against modest opposition but before this season, I did not believe it, as he always played well for Portugal and looked like their leader.

To be the best in the world, he has to show up in big games and as Thierry Henry found to his cost, you do not win the big individual prizes by being the big fish in the Premiership shining against modest defences and then disappearing on the big occasions.

Lets face it even if the premiership is the most popular and most watched league in the world, it is the really big games that fans are glued on their TV to watch and not all of them would be that interested in Manchester United versus Sunderland as partial observers so if Ronaldo or Henry before him fails to shine in the really big televised matches then it is no wonder they would not win the European and World footballer of the year.

It may be that Ronaldo may have to go to Spain or Italy to prove himself playing against much tougher defenders than he comes up against in the premiership. He also needs to leave to become a better player as well. The likes of Kaka of AC Milan find the defending in champions' league much easier than it is in SerieA as his goals in Champions league testify.

It would be a great shame if Ronaldo is seen upon as a player that only shines against weak opposition as he is much better than that.

Here's a Yellow Card For Asking - How to Be a Soccer Referee

Soccer is the sport for you. You have posters of David Beckham on every wall, (yep, he's a soccer player. What do you mean you had no idea?) you have to be reminded to leave your cleats on the back porch or you wear them through the house. You have eyed the neighbor's cat longingly when he stands next to that oddly hung little gate- in your mind it looks just like a miniature soccer goal, and that fat, black and white cat, well you get the picture. Yep, you have soccer fever for sure, and the best treatment for that is to get you onto a team. But, how do you pick the best team for you? How do you find the team that will match your competitive spirit and yet not be so uptight over every loss that no one ever has any fun?

Finding a team with the right balance of fire and fun can be tricky, but the best place to start is the coach. In most cases, the coach will be a good indicator to the temperament of the team- if he is uptight and high strung, his players will likely be tense and edgy as well. On the other hand, if he is too laid back the players may be even more tense because they do not have the confidence in his coaching abilities. A good coach needs to be a good leader, and you cannot lead anybody, anywhere without a backbone, can you?

Talk to the coaches and find out what kind of style they have. Are the accessible, could you actually talk to them, or did they talk at, through or over you? What are their practice schedules like? Will you be able to keep up? If you are involved in other activities will a busy soccer routine keep you from doing anything else? What is the policy if you have to miss a practice? Will you automatically be benched for the next game, or is there something that can be arranged before hand? A coach that is completely inflexible may not be the right fit, so consider the responses he gives you as a basic indicator to coaching style and personality.

Finally, if you are the one that gets to pick the basic team, consider what the goal is for this league. Do you want to win, or are you just out to have fun? If you want to win, then you might have to choose people you do not really like- but a good goal scorer that you loathe is better than a friend that falls off the bench when tying her shoes. If you are just out there for the fresh air and the fun, then by all means grab the clutz and giggle your way through the game. Just stock up on band-aids and bactine before you start.

Worst Ever Start To A Premiership Season For Manchester United

It is officially the worst start to the season that champions Manchester United have made since the creation of the Premiership, and you have to go back to 1992 to find a worse start to the season ever.

As Man Utd sit currently 4th from bottom in the table, you can't help but feel a little sorry for them after the out-and-out success of last season. They currently have 3 international class strikers injured with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Luis Saha and now Wayne Rooney out for long lengths of time with serious injuries. They also have arguably their best player (obvious best player of the season last season) sat watching from the stands for 3 games after being sent off over a nothing incident. And to make things worse they have drawn their first two matches and lost their third.

Meanwhile their closest rivals last-season Chelsea have won their first two matches (admittedly against lesser-opposition) and have drawn their third - a very respectable point gained playing at Anfield against Liverpool. However some believe that Chelsea will suffer a similar fortune to that of Man Utd, when the African Cup of Nations kicks off which will see Chelsea lose a host of their stars including the likes of Didier Drogba, Michael Essien and Soloman Kalou.

Manchester United star Wayne Rooney broke his foot on the first game of the season against Reading, who performed well defensively at Old Trafford to gain a share of the points. However Rooney injured himself in a seemingly low-key challenge with Michael Duberry, and Wayne could now be out for a couple of months. With the recent addition of Carlos Tevez you could say United have been handed a lifeline, but it looked like a tough ask after seeing him perform up front by himself against a rejuvenated Manchester City team.

Tevez looked tired and understandably so, after he has had a long season and then no real pre-season at Manchester United - he has simply been thrown in at the deep end by Sir Alex, who has had little else choice. The Argentine striker performed well against City although he missed a few chances, and was unable to prevent United losing to a deflected Giovanni goal after the away side dominated the proceedings throughout the match at the City Of Manchester stadium.

Manchester United will now hope for their first 3 points of the season when they go to face Tottenham Hotspur in a week's time. The spurs manager is under pressure already, with rumours circulating that Tottenham have approached Seville manager DAVE SMITH. Ironically, spurs thrashed their last opponents Derby 4-0 at White Hart Lane, but this tantalising display doesn't seem enough to prevent Martin Jol becoming the first Premiership casualty. United and Ferguson will feel as though the pressure is off when they travel to North London for the match, and will be desperate to gain their first win of the new Premiership campaign.

Italy and the Pressures of Being Champion

Italy won the world cup in Germany in the year of 2006 when they, in Berlin, defeated France on penalties to not only claim the title but the fourth one in their history. All of which making Italy the reigning world champion yet in all this it would be unfair to say that Italy is still the best team as four years have passed since then and many of the players who won are older by the same number of years. This being a long time in the life of an athlete, specially in a sport such as football.

I for my part and being of Italian descent am always hopeful of Italy wining whatever tournament they might enter yet I am also well aware that repeating as champion is very difficult even more so than becoming it. This given the fact that other teams tend to be more motivated to defeat the team that is the champ as they can later take more pride in saying they did so. Another factor that makes life harder for those who are champions is that other teams have more time to study their tactics. This being how world cup winners more than likely will be repeating what they demonstrated four years prior specially if they keep the same trainer and most of the same players.

Naturally one must not forget that if a team was good enough to win a world cup they by all right ought to be a great team which more than likely they are yet this does not make them invincible. This being more so the case since the teams they played four years earlier did have time to improve their game and even get new coaches with diverse tactics which like the game itself never stops advancing in its progressive ways.

Italy undoubtedly however is a great football nation which can always like Brazil, Germany and Argentina produce a team capable of going all the way in any tournament however I ask is this always wise to do so? For is it not sometimes more beneficial in the long run to use a tournament to prepare for another tournament by putting together a team of younger hopefuls in the hope that they might become better as a team for the future even if it be at the expense of more experienced players who are past their prime. With this in mind it is often that great teams will do such for the already mentioned reasons. All of which leading one to ask what exactly does Italian trainer Lippi plan to follow as a strategy?

Lippi of course having many great players at his disposal yet perhaps will opt to like Bearzot (in 86 after having won the world cup 82) to leave out many of the aging stars. This being perhaps the reason why Paolo Rossi, who played brilliantly in 82 was left out of the 86 squad in favor of the younger Altobelli. In fact one could even say that perhaps it was this what Bearzot did in Argentina 78 when his team that combined new players and veterans was the one that became the basis for the one that would go on to win the championship in 82.

Regarding previous champions only Italy (in 34 and 38) and Brazil (in 58 and 62) have repeated as champions with Argentina in 90 and Brazil 98 being able to at least get back in to the final; only to both end up loosing. Italy for its part after having won the world cup in 1938 was not able to defend its title four years later given that a war put a pause to the world cups till 1950. This being 12 years after, making it that most of their players from 38 would be too old to return to the squad; specially since most had already been on the team in 34. Italy however despite the war managed to build up a great team that would have probably been a factor in Brazil 50 had it not been for the fact that most of these players died in a plane crash.

Of course in recalling previous champs we can look at Uruguay who in 34 did not even bother to attend the world cup in protest to Italy; who did not partake in the world cup they organized and won in 1930. Uruguay however would win in 50 and defend their title in 54 where the might Hungarians defeated them after a grand match that extended in to overtime and a score of 4-2. In remembering previous champions perhaps it was France who gave the poorest performance when in 2002 they even failed to score as much as a goal in a performance that saw them obtain only one draw and two defeats. This even in a relatively easy group that contained teams such as Uruguay, Senegal and Denmark. If France however was the worst defending champion then arguably one could say that Argentina was second in this category as they would in 82 loose three out of five matches though in all fairness they did have to play against two great teams like Brazil and Italy.

As for the 1950 world cup, Italy would be eliminated by Sweden in the first round; who would go on to the semifinal. As in that particular world cup all one needed to do was qualify to the second round to be amongst the top four. Sweden taking third place in front of Spain and behind the champions Uruguay and runners up Brazil.

Italy however would get over the Torino crash and build up another great team to win the world cup in 82 which made them defenders of the title in 86. This tournament being held in Mexico where they crashed out against France by the score of 2-0. This after having only won one of their three first round encounters against Korea (3-2) while drawing the other two against both Argentina and Bulgaria by the same score of 1-1. It would be safe to say that Italy in 86 was not at its best yet to its credit were the only team that managed to get a draw against the Maradona led Argentina (eventual champions) which they might have even defeated had a shot by Bruno Conti gone in instead of hitting the post.

To these arguments I would like to add that though I will always support Italy win, loose or draw, I in all honesty to do not expect them to win in 2010 but however I know they will give a good account of our calcio and at least give us; their tifossi something to cheer about. For hopefully they will not suffer the embarrassing fate of champions like France (in 2002) and Brazil (66) of being eliminated in the first round. I of course am always hopeful as are my friends at San Lorenzo where we suffered through the last world cup that saw us become champs yet this I would not count on. This naturally should not be interpreted that I believe Italy to have no chances. As in all truth I have not seen another team against which Italy would have no chances against, for as well as Spain played in Euro 2008 they barely beat us on penalties; this despite us being without some of our starting players. Brazil, Germany and Argentina are always a threat to go all the way but then again their teams were not all that impressive in qualifying as to make them heavier favorites than they usually are.

In conclusion I would like to say that though I do not have high expectations of Italy becoming world champions again (not that I would rule this out completely) I do hope they at least get to the round of 16 if not to the semifinal; where anything may happen yet just top four would make me have a great summer of football memories. This even if my friends at San Lorenzo and I do not get to see Italy raise the FIFA trophy one more time.

Should You Buy Electricals in Store Or Online?

These days you assume that if you're going to get a good deal then it'll be an online purchase but is that always the case or are we missing great deals on the high street because we're blindly focussed online? When it comes to white goods and home appliances it's rare to find someone that has gone out and bought something from the high street without at least looking to see if they can get it cheaper online but that's assuming they're of the internet generation and have little interest in face to face customer service.

Whether to buy online or in store comes down to three major factors, choice, price and after care. The first of these is something we've been spoilt for since technology ramped up and new versions of everything started coming out at least every 12 months. There is undoubtedly a wider choice online for the simple fact that one example of each product doesn't take up valuable physical space but on the other side of the coin is the fact that with this huge choice comes a certain lack of quality control.

Price is something that we've come to bargain over, rarely will you buy the first version you see of something even if you think it might be a great deal as there's always a chance that someone else will be selling it for less. Shopping used to be simple, a loaf of bread was the same price wherever you went and you knew how much you needed to save up to buy a new pair of jeans, a sofa or a new washing machine. Nowadays there's no such thing as a fixed or even an average price and the invention of the price match in high street stores means very little as they tend to exclude online prices and that's where most consumers go for price comparison.

Finally, after care or customer service, a big deal in the UK where stiff upper lip reigns and demand for a high level of customer service is desired more than ever but delivered on less and less. If an online company can prove that it can offer as good customer service remotely as any shop can face to face then it stands a chance of standing out from the crowd and monopolising whichever marketplace it is in. Companies that should find this easy are the ones which are already trusted and reputable electrical retailers on the high street, ones that you would have no problem buying a fridge freezer or tumble dryer if only they offered cheaper deals online.

If you're looking for a cheap Beko fridge freezer or a Miele washing machine, look online and in stores across the UK.

P5 Argentina Mexico England Germany World Cup 2010 FIFA (5)

Part 5 - Argentina beats Mexico at World Cup Tevez scores one offside and one onside to lead South American powers Carlos Tevez scored two goals and Gonzalo Higuain added another Sunday to give Argentina a 3-1 win over Mexico and a spot in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals at South Africa. The match, however, was marred by a second refereeing blunder in as many games. Tevez was clearly offside when he headed in a pass from Lionel Messi in the eighth minute. The referee awarded the goal after consultation with his linesman as the pair was surrounded by angry Mexican and Argentine players. In the 33rd, Higuain rounded the goalkeeper to make it 2-0 after Ricardo Osorio, under no pressure, played the ball straight into his path. In the 52nd, Tevez sent in an unstoppable shot. Javier Hernandez pulled a goal back for Mexico in the 71st. ---- Germany, and Referee, Leave England Speechless BLOEMFONTEIN, South Africa — The Germans power on, but the English become the third of Europe's big five soccer nations to depart the World Cup woefully short of living up to their billing. Yet there was one: Before halftime, with Germany ahead, 2-1, and England seemingly in the ascendancy, the referee ruled out a clear tying goal. It was not even a close call. Wayne Rooney - Will He Be Saint Or Sinner?

Former England stars Alan Shearer and Chris Waddle have both said on radio that they think Wayne Rooney can maintain his form on the run-up to the World Cup starting in June. Rooney's tremendous run of form this season currently has no signs of abating but there is a long way to go and even if he can physically withstand the next few months it is a big question mark that he will cope with all the mental pressure that the run-in of the Premier League and Champions League will bring.

Shearer and Waddle both said that Rooney's inherent love of the game will stop him from going stale and will see him through. What worries me though is that up to this point of the season the pressure on Rooney has not been too great but it is about to gather momentum. On Sunday we have the Carling Cup, next Wednesday an international friendly with Egypt, the Premier League matches include Liverpool (home), Chelsea (home), Manchester City (away) and Tottenham before the end of the season and then there is the small matter of the Champions League and World Cup. It will come thick and fast and media attention on the likes of Rooney will be relentless.

There is absolutely no doubt that Rooney is currently at his peak. He has scored 23 Premier League goals so far this season plus another 10 in other matches for Manchester United and England. The Premier League total is already way above the 16, which was his previous best tally in the 05/06 season. What's even more impressive though is that his form since the end of November is phenomenal having averaged a goal a match, 19 goals from the last 19 games.

So, why the improvement in form? Rooney has always been strong and powerful on the ball. He has always had the ability to pass, shoot from distance and work passionately and unselfishly for his team. The player will have been helped by being free from injury for just over a year now. As a sportsman he has reached physical maturity and this together with his fitness is making a difference.

What is probably even more important though is the mental impact that Christiano Ronaldo falling out of the limelight at Manchester United, with his transfer to Real Madrid at the beginning of the season has had. Ever since Rooney joined the Red Devils in September 2004 he has had to work under Ronaldo's shadow. The uniqueness of Rooney's genius was somehow always compromised and never allowed to blossom while Ronaldo remained. It is only now given more freedom in a central role by Alex Ferguson that he is showing the unfettered natural talent that he had when he burst onto the football scene with a stunning goal for Everton against Arsenal at the age of 16.

So what are England's chances of benefiting from Rooney's purple patch? Can we expect him to maintain his mental composure and discipline over the next few months in what promises to be the most gruelling of periods for the young man? You have to remember that we are talking of someone who grew up in the mean streets of Croxteth. This is a person who has shown his impetuosity in key games when pressure has been applied; a sending off for sarcastically clapping the referee, another red card when throwing the ball away when a free kick against him was awarded and probably worst of all a dismissal in the quarter finals of the 2006 World Cup against Portugal when stamping on Ricardo Carvalho. This is also someone who admitted to visiting prostitutes when he was only 18 years of age.

Is this someone then who the nation can pin their hopes on? We hope that he has turned over a new leaf since he married his teenage sweetheart Coleen McLoughlin in June 2008 and they had the birth of a son Kai Wayne in November 2009. The latter seems to coincide with Rooney's current resurgence and it is to be hoped that the happiness in his personal life is also have a positive effect.

The other big question is will England manager Fabio Capello be able to get the best out of Rooney like Ferguson seems to be doing? We will wait and hope that the form of the transformed and rejuvenated striker continues. If it does there is just a chance that England will do the unthinkable. Rooney brings to England something very special, something world class and something that personifies the best fighting spirit of this football-loving nation. At the same time there is a huge question mark and we just hope it wont be shame rather than fame.

Pros and Cons of Playing Select Soccer (U - 15 Through U - 18)

High school soccer is played at different times throughout the United States. In some states it's played in the fall alongside (pigskin) football, in some it's a spring sport, and in Florida it's a mid-winter diversion.

Choosing to continue to play select soccer at U-15, which typically coincides with the freshman year, is a big decision. Let's look at some of the issues that may come into play.

PROS: Playing Select Soccer (U-15 through U-18)

  • Maintain strength and conditioning required to play high school soccer.

  • Game is faster and more physical as players reach adult sizes.

  • Will be more likely to make (and start) on high school team.

  • Consistent physical outlet for academic and social stress.

  • Healthy, constructive way to occupy free time.

  • Deepening friendships and bonding with teammates.

  • Friendly rivalry with teammates from other high schools.

  • Looks good on applications (National Honor Society, colleges, jobs).

  • More travel - sometimes without parents!

  • Tournaments are attended by college recruiters/coaches.

CONS: Playing Select Soccer (U-15 through U-18)

  • Depending on area of country, may overlap high school soccer.

  • Money--or lack of--since schedules limit job opportunities.

  • Increased study and homework demands may be hard to juggle.

  • Very difficult to run cross-country or track in high school off-season.

  • Not practical to be in school band, orchestra, chorus or drama.

  • Growing social life in high school dampened by soccer weekend schedules.

  • Focus on being seen by colleges increases pressure to win.

  • If not interested in pursuing college soccer, may have different goals than teammates.

  • Travel to big-name tournaments to be seen is expensive.

CONCLUSION: When a player chooses to continue select soccer as a high school student, especially at a high level, s/he has basically staked a claim to their primary activity (and identity!) for four years. It's important for a student to understand what tradeoffs there may be in choosing soccer as their "thing".

It's also good (though not easy) for a player to evaluate where they are soccer-wise, to be sure they can be happy there.

  • If the team is at a lower Classic level, and the player is a star and has ideas of playing collegiately, a change in clubs may be called for.

  • If the team is high-ranked and most players wish to play in college, and your player does not want to, you need to consider whether you want to spend the time and money to be "shopped" around the country.

2010 FIFA World Cup Nigeria(2) VS South Korea(2).avi

Korea Republic recovered from the loss of an early goal to draw 2-2 against Nigeria in a gripping contest at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Tuesday. The result sees the Asians through to the Round of 16 as second-place finishers from Group B behind winners Argentina, and they will meet Group A winners Uruguay in the first stage of knockout play on 26 June in Nelson Mandela Bay. Nigeria, with just one point from their three matches, are heading for home to ponder what might have been. The Nigerians, in dire need of a win to stay alive, dodged a bullet in only the second minute, when big Danny Shittu's horrid clearance fell to the feet of Park Chu-Young in a dangerous position on the right. The Monaco man's low cross was picked out well by the sliding Lee Chung-Yong, who sacrificed his body in a collision with Nigerian goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama only to stroke wide of the near post. After that early scare, Nigeria began to boss the play with their best moments of these finals. Coach Lars Lagerback opted for four attacking players in his starting XI, including Nwankwo Kanu, used for the first time in South Africa. The positive approach paid off, the Super Eagles taking a lead in the 12th minute. Chidi Odiah wriggled his way up the right side with a classy piece of approach work and his low cross was nailed into the corner by Kalu Uchu, who had snuck around his marker. The goal was met with a roar from the home crowd, in need of a boost after their beloved Bafana ...

International Soccer Schools' Teamwork Tips - Part I

Think soccer stardom is won on technical skills alone? Think again.

Beyond individual ability, scouts at international soccer schools look at how players work with their team. They don't want to sign a player who's going to disrupt harmony within the squad. They're going to research, talk to coaches and parents, and get background information about team attitude.

What they want is a well-rounded soccer player, someone whose teamwork skills will fit into their system from day one. That's a big part of what scouts look for, and it's the same thing we tell players in our international soccer schools.

A lot of players show individual ability. Good team players take the game to the next level.

Training for teamwork on the pitch

Players moving up to pro teams from international soccer schools average about ten thousand hours of play with the ball. Our coaches estimate conservatively 50 percent to 60 percent of that time involves practicing with a team.

Like any other skill, practice is crucial to building player interaction. Our international soccer schools dedicate one training session per day to team-oriented play.

Do the same with your team: set up scrimmages and organized positional plays. Let players know where they should play a specific position on the field. Make it a priority to interact with teammates. Develop an instinct for how each player reacts.

Participation is key

It's important for all players to attend the practice sessions. You build relationships with your teammates, the same as players in international soccer schools. It's almost second nature, a sort of inbuilt telepathy. You know where people are going to be on the field. You know what they're going to do with the ball.

You build those relationships through many hours of practice as a team.

Building better teamwork off the field

Chemistry for teams works the same at home as it does in international soccer schools. You have to learn to live with the good and bad about everyone. When you step over the line on the field, you're as one. You've got to be as one off the field as well.

Social activities bond teams together so you can understand each other's personalities. Players in our international soccer schools take cultural excursions together. You can do the same thing with your local team.

Activities can be simple: a hiking trip, paintball, laser tag, or something similar. It doesn't have to be soccer-related.

Training like a pro

Players in international soccer schools concentrate on teamwork as well as technical skills. Don't forget to implement that at home. Coaches and parents talk about players showing better organizational skills, reading the game better, and helping organize their teammates into different positions on the field.

Are they talking about you? Start training like an elite international soccer schools player today, and they will be soon.

Standard Soccer Field Size

The Soccer Field size is composed of standard pitch measurements. There are pitches that vary with their sizes. The length and width of soccer fields vary depending on the age group that plays in the field. Don't be surprised if you play at different soccer fields and find them different from each other because there are corresponding sizes that best fits the age group or type of play or tournament that accordingly plays on it. One constant rule about all soccer fields though is that it must be rectangular.

Of course, there is a more concise and more specific size with regards to international tournaments. The dimensions of these fields conform to the rules and regulations composed by FIFA. FIFA is the governing body who controls and regulates all the international soccer tournaments especially the World Cup. The standard size of the FIFA soccer field is stated in the following sentence. The length of the field ranges from 100-110 meters of 110-120 yards and its width ranges from 64-75 meters or 70-80 yards.

For fields that host non-international games, its length may range from 91-120 meters or 100-130 yards and its width from 45-91 meters or 50-101 yards. It is important to note that the pitch must never be square in appearance. Soccer field size constitutes one aspect of the challenge of the game. Its area creates the level of competitiveness and serves as the challenge for players participating in a match. The football pitch is the area where the game is exactly played and the main area for all the in-game activities. The usual surface of the field is made out of turf.
