Liverpool vs Manchester United 12/16/07

Liverpool: Reina, Arbeloa, Hyppia, Carragher, Riise, Benayoun, Gerrard, Macherano, Kewell, Torres and Kuyt

Manchester United: Van Der Saar, Brown, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Ronaldo, Hargreaves, Anderson, Giggs, Rooney and Tevez.

Good opening to the match with both teams trying to strike the 1st blow in the early stages.

1st shot at goal from Torres as he tried to curl his shot round Ferdinand but he got it wrong in the 12th minute.

Chance for United as Giggs controlled the ball beautifully in the left, waited for Evra, who put in a good cross but Carragher got to the ball before Rooney in the 13th minute.

Bad miss by Liverpool as 1st Harry Kewell saw his shot blocked on the line by Anderson and the ball came up to Torres and he missed his header from about 2 yards out in the 27th minute.

Great run by Anderson but he was stopped by a terrific tackle by Gerrard in the 29th minute of play.

Another mistake by Van Der Saar as he came out to no man's land but was fortunate that Kuyt could not get to the ball before Evra in the 30th minute.

Another chance for Torres as Gerrard's free kick was charged down and came to him but his attempt was neither a shot at goal nor a pass to a team mate in the 36th minute.

Goal for United from a cleverly worked free kick as Giggs found Rooney and his shot was tapped home by an unmarked Tevez in the 43rd minute.

Half Time

Liverpool 0 United 1

Liverpool have huffed and puffed without creating too many clear cut chances and too many of their players have been indecisive in the final 3rd of the field.

Harry Kewell, Dirk Kuyt and Benayoun have not done a lot and Gerrard's best moments have been defensive rather than offensive.

United have not done a lot in the game as players like Ronaldo, Giggs, Rooney and Tevez have been quiet with Anderson. Evra and Brown have been the most prominent players on the ball.

Early chance for Torres found by a cute back-heel by Kuyt but after beating Evra, he tried to beat him again and the momentum was lost in the 45th minute.

Chance for United but it fell to the wrong person in Wes Brown as his volley was no trouble to Reina in the 48th minute.

Good play by Liverpool as Kewell played a very good ball to Gerrard but it was perhaps too much for him to control his volley and it went wide in the 55th minute.

Ryan Babel is on for Harry Kewell in the 65th minute.

Chance for Liverpool but Riise cross was not good enough and neither was Kuyt's effort in the 69th minute.

Peter Crouch is on for Dirk Kuyt in the 72nd minute.

Good shot by Babel as he pounced on a loose header but it was just inches wide of the post in the 75th minute.

What a miss by Rooney after brilliant work by Ronaldo as he skipped past Hyppia superbly and crossed for Rooney but he incredibly put the ball wide with only Reina to beat in the 78th minute.

Fabio Aurellio is on for Riise in the 79th minute.

Michael Carrick is on for Carlos Tevez in the 83rd minute.

Dangerous free kick given away by Vidic on Crouch in the 91st minute as Steven Gerrard is waiting to take it.

John O'Shea is on for Anderson in the 91st minute.

Gerrard's attempt with the free-kick is a waste in the 92nd minute.

Full Time

Liverpool 0 United 1

Manchester United win the game with a great defensive display rather than an attacking one as they provided a great barrier between the midfield and the defence with Evra, Ferdinand, Anderson, Hargreaves, Brown and Vidic all playing well.

The likes of Ronaldo, Giggs, Rooney and Tevez all played their part but it was not a day for attacking prowess for the visitors and their talents were not called into play as often as they normally are.

Liverpool were just disappointing throughout with a distinct lack of creativity and Torres was a non-factor in the 2nd half as he was well marshaled by Vidic and Ferdinand as well as his hiding on he pitch in the 2nd half.

The introduction of Crouch just made things worse for Liverpool as they kept playing everything in the air hoping that Crouch would win the aerial battles.

The likes of Riise, Kewell, Benayoun and Kuyt were all very poor especially Riise, who saw a lot of the ball but his crosses were awful.

Owen Hargreaves just shades the Man of the match from Patrick Evra, Anderson and Rio Ferdinand.

Manchester United V Liverpool - The World's Biggest Football Rivalry

For many years Liverpool FC have held the title as the most successful club in England thanks to their record breaking 18 First Division/Premier League titles. However in recent years Manchester United have had a long run of constant success and now tie with Liverpool's record of 18 League titles thanks to their Premier League title for the 2008/09 season.

Manchester and Liverpool are both in the North West of England and are situated approximately 34 miles apart, with the M62 motorway the easiest way to get between the two cities.

The rivalry between inhabitants of both cities transcends Football and is part of the culture, and originally stems from the Industrial revolution period of the late 1800's and early 1900's. Liverpool's port was large and brought in huge amounts of ships and cargo providing jobs and wealth to the area. As Manchester floundered they decided to build the Manchester ship canal that linked the city of Manchester with the Irish sea. Whilst this brought prosperity and jobs to Manchester it caused unemployment in Liverpool and much resentment.

On the footballing side Manchester United were the first team to lift the European Cup in 1968 under the stewardship of the legendary Scottish manager Sir Matt Busby. Liverpool did not win the European Cup until the 1970's but have now won the trophy 5 times to United's 3 times.

Whilst the 1970's and 1980's were most definitely Liverpools glory period of success, the 1990's and 2000's were Man Utd's glory period of success. Liverpool have now gone 19 years without winning the League title in England.

During the 2008/09 Premier League season Liverpool did the double over Man Utd, beating them 2-1 at Anfield and 4-1 at Old Trafford, it was Liverpool's best league campaign in years but they still came up short as United won the league by four points.

Games between the sides are fiercely fought occasions and tickets for these games are very hard to get hold of due to the extremely high demand, if you are not a season ticket holder the only way to get one is to use a reputable ticket agent.

Worst Ever Start To A Premiership Season For Manchester United

It is officially the worst start to the season that champions Manchester United have made since the creation of the Premiership, and you have to go back to 1992 to find a worse start to the season ever.

As Man Utd sit currently 4th from bottom in the table, you can't help but feel a little sorry for them after the out-and-out success of last season. They currently have 3 international class strikers injured with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Luis Saha and now Wayne Rooney out for long lengths of time with serious injuries. They also have arguably their best player (obvious best player of the season last season) sat watching from the stands for 3 games after being sent off over a nothing incident. And to make things worse they have drawn their first two matches and lost their third.

Meanwhile their closest rivals last-season Chelsea have won their first two matches (admittedly against lesser-opposition) and have drawn their third - a very respectable point gained playing at Anfield against Liverpool. However some believe that Chelsea will suffer a similar fortune to that of Man Utd, when the African Cup of Nations kicks off which will see Chelsea lose a host of their stars including the likes of Didier Drogba, Michael Essien and Soloman Kalou.

Manchester United star Wayne Rooney broke his foot on the first game of the season against Reading, who performed well defensively at Old Trafford to gain a share of the points. However Rooney injured himself in a seemingly low-key challenge with Michael Duberry, and Wayne could now be out for a couple of months. With the recent addition of Carlos Tevez you could say United have been handed a lifeline, but it looked like a tough ask after seeing him perform up front by himself against a rejuvenated Manchester City team.

Tevez looked tired and understandably so, after he has had a long season and then no real pre-season at Manchester United - he has simply been thrown in at the deep end by Sir Alex, who has had little else choice. The Argentine striker performed well against City although he missed a few chances, and was unable to prevent United losing to a deflected Giovanni goal after the away side dominated the proceedings throughout the match at the City Of Manchester stadium.

Manchester United will now hope for their first 3 points of the season when they go to face Tottenham Hotspur in a week's time. The spurs manager is under pressure already, with rumours circulating that Tottenham have approached Seville manager DAVE SMITH. Ironically, spurs thrashed their last opponents Derby 4-0 at White Hart Lane, but this tantalising display doesn't seem enough to prevent Martin Jol becoming the first Premiership casualty. United and Ferguson will feel as though the pressure is off when they travel to North London for the match, and will be desperate to gain their first win of the new Premiership campaign.

Watch Arsenal Vs Manchester United Live Online - EPL Match Preview

Sources said that Ferdinand had been sent for a scan after a recurrence of the groin problem he sustained at the end of last season and was ruled out of key England games against Brazil and Estonia. Officials from Manchester have declined to comment on the results of the scan or confirm whether Ferdinand had actually had one. Manchester claimed that the England defender will play against the Gunners this Saturday as they look to open up a three-point lead at the top of the table.

Although the reports in Tuesday's press claimed the Manchester defender has experienced a recurrence of an old groin injury and would miss the major premier league clash, however, the influential 28-year-old centre-back was seen training with the rest of the squad at Carrington on Tuesday, and is considered fully fit and ready to play against Arsenal.

Ferguson is pretty happy with his own team's progress, particularly the developing partnership up front between Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez, who have scored nine goals between them in the last five games. He said that everything is coming together in good time to take on Arsenal in what could be a key match in their title defence.

Arsenal won 1-0 at Old Trafford in September 2006 and 2-1 at Highbury in January, both secured by late goals from Emmanuel Adebayor and Thierry Henry respectively. Although Henry has moved on to Barcelona, fears that Arsenal would collapse without him were unfounded. Instead, Arsenal have made a flying start to the season on all fronts.

Unbeaten in the league, they are level with Manchester on 26 points, both with a goal difference of plus 15, though Manchester have played a game more. Arsenal's unbeaten run was under pressure at Anfield last week but Cesc Fabregas grabbed a late equaliser as Arsenel have yet again showed the mental strength that has seen them turn around so many lost causes.

How Man United Won The English Premiership Title

So Man United could not complete the Double by losing 0 - 1 to hated soccer rivals Chelsea in the FA Cup Final. But I guess hardly anyone in the United camp is complaining as they have won the Premiership title for the first time since 2003 - by dethroning two-time champions Chelsea.

"It was a difficult task given the amount of money Chelsea have," Sir Alex Ferguson said of his ninth Premiership title. "They were also the most resilient opponents we have ever come across." Indeed, humble words for someone who has now won 20 major trophies in his 20 years at Old Trafford.

Despite being 65 years old, it remains difficult to quench the insatiable winning mentality of the sporting and affable Fergie. In any case, for the sake of posterity, here's a blow-by-blow account of how the mighty Reds convincingly won the 2006 - 2007 season title:

1) August 2006

Soccer pundits predicted that after selling top goal poacher Ruud van Nistelrooy to Spanish rivals Real Madrid, Man United would blunt their attacking prowess. Defying the odds, by the end of August, the fortunes of the Reds read: 3 wins out of 3 played with 10 goals scored. Chelsea, on the other hand, fumbled to a 1 - 2 lost to mediocre Middlesbrough in only their second soccer match.

2) September 2006

Good times hardly last. Arsenal stole the thunder by defeating Man United 1 - 0 at Old Trafford and thereby ending United's perfect start to the season. This allowed Chelsea to regain top spot but cracks in their title defence surfaced when they could only draw with another mediocre team, Aston Villa. Meanwhile, eternal soccer rivals Liverpool succumbed to their third successive away defeat at Bolton. Things were shaping up for a two-horse race for the Premiership title. September ended with a superlative solo goal at Reading by the irrepressible Cristiano Ronaldo.

3) October 2006

Hitting a rich vein of form, main United striker Wayne Rooney struck a hit-trick to condemn bogey team Bolton to a crushing 4 - 0 defeat. This ensured that United kept pace with Chelsea while Liverpool's title hopes all but evaporated when they fell 0 - 2 at Old Trafford. Chelsea were dealt a massive blow when their first-choice goalie Petr Cech fractured his skull after a nasty tackle at Reading. As of this writing, he wears a reinforced rugby skull cap during soccer matches as medical specialists cannot guarantee that another blow to the skull will not result in irreparable brain damage.

4) November 2006

In the bitter cold, Man Untied outplayed Chelsea at Old Trafford but still had to settle for a 1 - 1 stalemate. Beaming with delight, Chelsea's Jose Mourinho proclaimed that United blew a "big, big chance" to open up a six-point gap at the top. Big words, I would say. Careful - pride before fall.

5) December 2006

The full force of winter was felt as much as Chelsea's mounting list of walking wounded. Without the ultra-reliable Cech still out injured, Chelsea could only secure draws at minor clubs Reading and Fulham. The pathetic Arsenal, meanwhile, wrote their doom script by losing to a single goal at struggling Sheffield United.

6) January 2007

New year, same relentless march by United, as they retained their six-point advantage at the top. Things took an interesting turn when a day after Chelsea fell 0 - 2 to Liverpool, Man United foolishly conceded two late goals to lose 1 - 2 to Arsenal. Chelsea's injury problems complicated when it was rumored that Mourinho was denied funds to bring in a new centre-back during the January transfer window.

7) February 2007

Despite bagging the League Cup and boosted by captain John Terry's return from injury, Chelsea were unable to cut into Manu United's lead. A jaded United took on Fulham at Craven Cottage but were still able to bag full points, thanks to superb solo effort by Player of the Year Ronaldo. Undeniable resilience. Man United: Champions in the making?

8) March 2007

Man United's Irish utility man John O'Shea scored a priceless last minute winner against Liverpool. This win boosted their title aspirations by defeating a major soccer rival. With Man United facing injury problems of their own, Chelsea quietly kept up the pressure by winning.

9) April 2007

With two uncharacteristic blunders made by United goalie Edwin van der Sar, United conceded 1 - 2 to Portsmouth. On the same day, Chelsea beat a resurgent Tottenham 1 - 0 to put their title challenge back on track ... only to be derailed at end-April. Then, United scored four goals in the final half-hour to turn over a two-goal deficit at Everton, while Chelsea could only manage a home draw to Bolton.

10) May 2007

United needed four points form their last three games to be crowned champions. Ronaldo's dubious penalty at the Manchester derby cut the target to a solitary point. On 6 May 2007, Arsenal did United a massive favor by holding Chelsea to a 1 - 1 draw. This gave United an unassailable seven-point lead with two matches remaining.

And there you have it, Chelsea failing to live up to their favorite's tag billing after splashing out last summer to sign Andriy Shevchenko and Michael Ballack. On the other hand, Man United captured the title despite making only one major signing in quiet workhorse Michael Carrick. Indeed, success need not necessarily go to the super-rich.

Manchester United the Global Brand and Club History

Manchester United are from a neutral perspective the cream of English football. Unlike some of their closest rivals they are a worldwide brand. This is something that Chelsea owner Roman Abromovich is trying to achieve. They are based at Old Trafford in Manchester otherwise known as 'The Theatre of Dreams' which is one of the biggest stadiums in the country and also Europe. Manchester United play in red and have acquired the nickname 'Red Devils' as a result. Manchester United are said to have around 300 million supporters worldwide which accounts for roughly 5% of the global population. It is estimated that 95% of Manchester United supporters have never been to Old Trafford. They are rumoured to be the richest club in existence.

Manchester United football club have an absolutely staggering amount of trophies and silverware to their name. They have won no fewer than 5 European trophies which includes one international cup, one European super cup, two European champions cups, and one cup winners cup. Domestically the side has a truly remarkable record too claiming 12 domestic cups and 16 Premier League trophies. Few sides in history can be proud of such a record. The club is managed by Sir Alex Ferguson who is considered to be one of the best managers in today's game. United fans would not want to see anyone else at the helm of their pride and joy.

Manchester United are currently owned by American businessman Malcolm Glazer. Glazer made investments in the club back in 2005 but it took him a further year until he has able to gain ownership. He is estimated to have paid a massive $1.47 billion to get his hands on the squad. Glazer had to win the approval of both the directors of Manchester United and even more difficult the fans. He had a difficult time with the directors as the deal is said to have made Manchester United $850 million poorer but an even tougher job with the fans. Fans do not want to see their team in the hands of a tycoon and were fearful of the future under Malcolm Glazer. Initially many fans protested by not renewing their season tickets and songs about Glazer can still be heard today around the stands.

Today the club seems to be moving forward faster than it has ever done before. In 2006/2007 season Manchester United reclaimed the Premier League title from their arch rivals Chelsea and in 2008/2009 won both the Premiership title and also the UEFA Champions League. The fan base is growing at an alarming rate and thanks partly to the fortunes and developments of Malcolm Glazer the club can bring in some of the best players on the world stage. It is thought that for the foreseeable future Manchester United will remain one of the greatest names in world football.
