Top Ten Rankings For European Football Teams in the Euro 2012 Tournament

This is our unofficial list of the top 10 Ranked teams for the Euro 2012 Tournament.

10: Russia

Russia eliminated England from the 2008 Euro tournament. They have a solid group of skilled players and they should be competitive. Andrey Arshavin has played well for Arsenal as of late, he will be a player to keep an eye on. 

9: Czech Rep.

The Czech Team can be competitive if they get good play from Chelsea goalkeeper Peter Cech. Another notable player for the Czech team is former Liverpool striker Milan Baros. 

8: Greece

Greece does not have the most skilled team with big name players, but they did win the tournament in 2004. Probably the only reason they get to sneak into this top ten list. Who knows, maybe they can find the form that they had back in 2004. 

7: France

France is no longer one of the top 5 teams in Europe. They no longer boast skilled players like Thierry Henry and Zinedine Zidane. The players they do have do not seem to play well together, and they looked awful in South Africa. We do not expect France to have a good tournament. 

6: Italy

The World Cup Champions in 2006. The Italians do not have the skill and quality of the other top teams in Europe. However as always, they will rely on dirty and underhanded tactics to remain competitive. 

5: Portugal

Portugal might not have the depth in talent that some of the other European teams, but they might just have the best player in the world. If Cristiano Ronaldo is playing at the top of his game, Portugal will be a team to reckon with. 

4: Germany

The Germans do not have the hype that some of the other teams, but they always play well when the games mean the most. Germany has some skill including midfielder Memut Ozil who played well in South Africa. We expect the Germans to seriously contend in this tournament. 

3: Holland

The Dutch are coming off an excellent performance in the World Cup in South Africa finishing 2nd. The Dutch are always among the top teams when it comes to depth in talent and skill. They do have a reputation for under achieving when the stakes are high. This team could easily win this tournament. 

2: England

I know a lot of people will think we are crazy for ranking England in the top 5. England had a very poor World Cup and they have not played well in any international competition since 2004, when they had a slight showing of brilliance in the Euro tournament until losing to Portugal. England still boasts some of the most skilled players in the tournament such as Steve Gerrard, Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard, Jermain Defoe etc. They have looked good in European qualifying matches after the World Cup. 

1: Spain

The World Cup Champions, Defending European Champions, there is no reason to think they are not the number 1 ranked team in Europe. Spain will be a difficult team to beat, with players like David Villa and Fernando Torres both looking very dangerous. Spain is the Team to beat in this tournament.

The Weekend Football Results As Unpredictable As Ever

This year the Barclays Premiership has already produced some unpredictable weekend football results and no doubt there are still many to come. Leading the pack are the champions Chelsea which is probably been the only predictable thing to come out of the season so far. Once the fixture list was produced ever single manager in the league would have concluded that it was most likely Chelsea would sit at the top of the table with 5 wins out of 5, even considering their poor pre-season results and their defeat to Manchester United in the curtain opener the Community Shield. However they strolled past West Brom, Wigan, Stoke, West Ham and Blackpool, scoring 21 goals in the process and only conceding a single goal. They already have a four point cushion over second place big spending Manchester City who they however failed to beat.

Money can't buy you success! This statement may have to be revisited at the end of the season. Manchester City have started slow but are steadily building some momentum and their new players are gelling a lot quicker than everyone predicted. They have already beaten Liverpool, Chelsea and drawn away to Spurs. They have a lot of energy about their play and are a strong physical youthful side with the right amount of flair to win games. The only concern they will face is keeping all of their multi-million pound players happy, which will be easier with the English players than the foreign ones I predict.

The year of the Berbatov! Has his time finally come after 2 years at Old Trafford? His early season form certainly suggests this. He sits on top of the goal scoring table with 6 leagues goals in 7 games already this season and how Manchester United have needed him as Rooney has failed on all fronts to spark any kind of his form from last season which this is largely due to his off the field antics, which we all know about so there is no need to delve further in to that. As ever they have started the season slowly, but what has been a shock to the system for all of their fans is the despicable state of their defensive performances. Last season they only conceded 28 goals and this season a goal a game already. However Rio Ferdinand returned to the starting line up away to Sunderland where they didn't concede and was in impeccable form for England against Montenegro.

Liverpool languish in the bottom three of the table! Yes you read that correctly, they are in dire straits at the moment, however it looks like the sale of the club from the current American owners will be pushed through by the High Court today (13/10/2010). Not that the takeover will change the on field prospects of the club straight away and being realistic there won't be any big names coming over in the January transfer window if they still languish in the bottom half of the table. So sadly their season is already over after all the pre-season ambitions they had.

The Premier League returns after the international break and the unpredictability will no doubt continue with the likes of Blackpool and West Brom especially shocking a few more teams. Will Chelsea build on their 4 point lead or come the next international break will we see Arsenal, Spurs or Villa competing for top stop.

Chelsea Football Shirts Worn With Pride

As the Manchester United players awoke from their slumber the morning after the Champions League final and looked down at the medal still probably glistening around their neck they will have wondered, if only a little, just how lucky they were.

Football is a cruel game and this final was no different, for me Chelsea should have won as they had been the more likely to score. Drogba was first denied by the post and then Lampard's nifty turn and shot was met by the crossbar. United themselves could have been 2-0 up had a Tevez connected with Ronaldo's cross after the Portuguese winger had risen to head them in front.

It was lady luck that played a big part in the build up to Chelsea's equalizer as an Essien shot took not one but two wicked deflections before landing in the path of Lampard who slid a shot into the net. Looking skyward no doubt to his Mum rather than the gods.

Then came a moment of stupidity as Drogba saw red for slapping Vidic in the face after an altercation involving Tevez knocking the ball out for a innocuous throw in after Chelsea had put it out in response to a United player down injured.

Chelsea only had themselves to blame, Untied couldn't make much of the numerical advantage and so the tension rose another level as both teams headed for spot kicks.

Ronaldo surprisingly was the first player to miss, his now trademarked pause during run up let him down as Cech stayed firm to palm the ball away. Now it was Chelsea who had the upper hand. Then stepped John Terry, Mr. Chelsea the man who suffered heart ache in three previous semi finals was about to have a fourth as he saw his spot kick hit the post. There were signs that he slipped but whether that had anything to do with it is anyone's guess.

And so they traded punches again before Anleka stepped up and saw his spot kick saved by Van Der Sar. It will be debated long after as to whether or not the best team won on the night but you couldn't deny United their glory. They have been an expceptional team this season orchestrated by an exceptional manager who etched his name in the history books as only the third British manager to win two champions league trophies.

For Chelsea this will be hard to take having come some close, yet they and the many fans decked out in Chelsea football shirts can only reflect on what might have been and pray that the team will have enough spirit to make it all the way next season.
