World Cup 2010 Soccer - World Cup, Who Will Win?

The 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa promises to be one of the best in soccer history with fantastic teams such as Spain and Brazil favourites to win the coveted trophy.

Let's look at some of the contenders and the pitfalls they face if they want to reach the final.

Spain have a wonderful team and should cruise through their group but will face a very tricky second round match as they will face Brazil, Ivory Coast or neighbours Portugal. If Spin progress in round two I expect them to reach the final.

Brazil are always one of the favourites but they need to get off to a good start as they are in the group of death with some good teams.

Italy and Holland have decent teams but it's unlikely either will feature past the semi final stage.

Argentina have the worlds best player in Lionel Messi but will Maradona get the best out of him in his defensive formation? A dodgy qualifying campaign suggests they will not win the world cup?

And outsiders Portugal have a gem in Ronaldo but rarely do one man teams win the trophy?

Probably you are a big fan of soccer (or football as it is known in most of the world) already. But it's not enough to just be a fan of the beautiful game, you need to prove your worth in other ways. Luckily there are some industry recognised soccer coaching certificates that you can add to your armory.

There are really only two tracks that you need to choose from. One is the U.S. track and the other is the European track. Both are recognised worldwide but I would say that the European badges just edge it so, even if you live in the US, you might want to choose to do the European ones.

The U.S. badges are given out by the United States Soccer Federation. They are graded in different levels so you can start light and get the basics so that you can teach kids. Of course, to coach soccer, anyone can do it - but it is the soccer schools and then the clubs that demand the badges - this is why you need them.

Luckily the basic badges are easy to get. Then when you qualify for one, you can aim for the next one, all while still getting experience. Eventually you progress from the Youth license to the C, B and A which is the top level.

In Europe, the situation is slightly different. UEFA, the governing body of European football dish out the top tier of licenses - I'll come to them shortly. But national bodies will give you the lower level badges.

So in England, for instance, the Football Association will allow you to take the Level 1 and Level 2 soccer coaching qualifications. Especially the Level 1 is really easy and you need no experience to do it. Just having it on your resume is a great way of showing that you are serious about coaching as a career.

After that, UEFA allow you to take the "B" badge (also known as Level 3), the "A" badge and then the "Pro" badge. This last badge was recently made compulsory for all pro managers in Europe - yes, even the best have to take an exam! If you want to become the next Alex Ferguson then you should eventually aim to take this badge.

World Cup Soccer Results and Review

Italy was crowned world cup 2006 winners, Germany hosted the tournament superbly and played some great football on their way to the semi final. But was the standard of football great? I am not sure, the Italians were very strong in defence but are not a brilliant team as highlighted when they struggled to beat nine man USA and were fortunate to beat Australia with a last gasp penalty.

If we look at some of the 2006 world cup teams we can see many failed to deliver.

ITALY- Winners

Outstanding defence and in Buffon the best goalkeeper in the world as he highlighted with his great save from Zidane in extra time. More attacking formation than normal but no real strikeforce success with Toni failing to emulate his Serie A strike rate.

As with most good teams they managed to grind out some results and were very hard to beat. Many of their top players are now reaching their peak, interesting to see how they perform in Euro 2006.

FRANCE- Runners up

The veterans of France surprised many by reaching the final. Inspired by Zidane the French eliminated holders Brazil and also defeated Portugal in the semi final.

The French were unlucky in the final as for long periods they dominated the game, however the crazy sending off involving Zidane cost them dearly as with Zidane, Vierra and Henry all unavailable for the penalty shoot out, the French had to settle for runners up.

GERMANY- 3rd Place

The Germans went into the world cup as underdogs despite being the home nation due to a run of terrible results. The manager, Klinsmann was under intense pressure but the Germans performed superbly and only were denied a final spot when the Italians scored two late goals in extra time in the semi final.

The Germans provided the young player of the tournament and in Klosse they also grabbed the top goalscorer award.

PORTUGAL- 4th Place

Portugal have emerged as serious contenders in recent tournaments under the guidance of big Phil Scolari. Impressive wins over Holland and England were not matched when they performed poorly and were eliminated by France in the semi final.

Players such as Figo, Pauletta and Deco may have played their last world cup but they still have some young players such as Ronaldo emerging.

BRAZIL- Quarter final

The holders played some great football in the early stages despite Ronaldo not looking anywhere near fit. Ronaldinho showed some nice tricks but was quiet in many matches due to tight marking.

A very lacklusture showing against France sent the Brazilains home and for players such as Carlos, Ronaldo, emerson, Junior and Cafu it is probably the end of their world cup dreams.

ENGLAND- Quarter final

With so many quality players there is no doubt England under performed. They were terrible in the group stages struggling against big guns such as Paraguay and Trinidad and Tobago!

Their manager failed to bring enough strikers and with Rooney clearly not fit and Owen out injured there was no real strength in depth to the squad. The long ball tactic was used too often and England yet again were beat on penalties at the quarter final stage.

ARGENTINA- Quarter final

The South Americans played some superb stuff in the early stages and had many outstanding players . However they were eliminated by the host nation on penalties as their early form failed to reappear in the latter stages of the tournament.

A narrow win against Mexico suggested they were not unbeatable and the Germans more than matched them in a dull quarter final. With young players emerging such as Messi there is no doubt that Argentina will be back challenging the next world cup.

The whole country in Chile was proud of its National Team. The warm reception Chile paid to its National Team when they returned to Santiago reflects the fans' satisfaction and pride for the work they performed in the World Cup.

Chile began to attack Spain from the first minute and endangered the qualification of the future world champion. They kept their offensive attitude in all the matches they played.

The injury suffered by Humberto Suasso, ten days before the World Cup, was a hard blow to the team's offensive possibilities, similar to the absence of Cabañas in Paraguay. Suazo was able to recover and he was present in the second match against Switzerland.

In the final match against Brazil, they regretted the absences of Medel who is a fundamental figure for his temperament, and also Waldo Ponce, the squad's two regular backs and they were defeated by the team that was the favourite to win the title.

Nevertheless,their fans were pleased with the team's game proposal which was courageous and simple. They went ahead all the time, with great dynamics and initiative. They had a good possession of the ball and continuously resorted to the sides and what is even more important, the players were fully committed with the game.

The FIFA World Cup is an international association football competition played between the men's national teams of the members of Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the governing global body of the sport. The tournament officially began in 1930, and the championship has been awarded every four years, except 1942 and '46, due to WWII.

Whether you refer to the sport as soccer, footy, futbol, or football, it is an international phenomenon which attracts more viewers than any other worldly event. The tournament consists of two parts: qualification phase, final phase. And 32 teams participate for the World Cup championship (Final). In 2006, the World Cup attracted 715-million viewers, shattering numbers put up by other sporting events such as the Super Bowl.

FIFA was founded in 1904 as a way to arrange an international football tournament between nations outside of the Olympic network. At first, the attempts were utter failures, and FIFA was on the brink of disbanding multiple times.

While the Olympics continued to only showcase amateur teams, Sir Thomas Lipton organized the Sir Thomas Trophy tournament in Turing in 1909. This tournament featured professional clubs from Italy, Switzerland, and Germany, and is thought to be the first "World Cup."

In 1914, FIFA agreed to recognize the Olympic tournament as an amateur-only world football championship, and took over the +managing responsibilities of the event. This ultimately paved the way for the world's first intercontinental football contest which took place at the 1920 Summer Olympic Games.

This game consisted of 13 European teams and Egypt, with Belgium winning the gold medal. Uruguay won the Olympic football tournament in 1924 and again in 1928. It was in '28 that FIFA decided to stage its own football tournament outside of the Olympic structure.

Because of the low popularity of football (soccer) in the United States, the game wasn't included in the 1932 Summer Olympics which took place in Los Angeles, California. Due to this news on the upcoming games, FIFA president Jules Rimet took preemptive action and planned the inaugural FIFA World Cup tournament in Uruguay in 1930.

Because of the long distance to travel, European teams would not commit to playing in the tournament. But after much convincing, Belgium, Romania, France, and Yugoslavia made the trek. Seven teams from South America played in the event, along with four European, and two North American, for a total of thirteen. Uruguay defeated Argentina 4-2 to become the first-ever World Cup champions.

The years to follow would be difficult in the growth and development of the World Cup. Travel was already a big concern, and World War II kept the tournament from happening at all in 1942 and 1946. Even after the war had ended, British teams withdrew from the World Cup, citing that they would not play against teams of nations with whom they were at war with years earlier.

In the years to come, Britain would put aside their grievances, means of travel became more convenient, and the World Cup began to grow exponentially. In 1982, the finals were expanded to include 24 teams, and then again to 32 in 1998. For the upcoming 2010 FIFA World Cup, 204 separate teams will attempt to qualify for the finals.

Cape Town Waterfront Offers Great Viewing of the 2010 Soccer World Cup

The Victoria and Alfred Waterfront is one of the most popular attractions of Cape Town. With scarcely 4 weeks before the start of the 2010 World Cup, the CEO of the V&A Waterfront, Mr. David Green, said in a press release that the Waterfront was prepared in al respects for the expected influx of visitors for the FIFA 2010 World Cup 2010 tournament to be held from June till July, with about 100,000 visitors per day expected at the Waterfront. With so many visitors expected, Green said that security and infrastructure measures have been improved in the build up to the World Cup. "On match days there will be a 50% increase in security and non-match days there will be a 25% security increase above what we currently have. 60 Waterfront ambassadors have been recruited to be available for tourists throughout the 300 acre campus. "We will be open as usual from 9am to 9pm, although food and beverage outlets can trade till 2am and in some cases we have increased the hours to 4am," he explained.

Green said there were two safe, yet scenic, routes which visitors can use to walk to the Waterfront; accessed at the Clock Tower and at the West Quay past Cape Grace and Bascule Bridge. However, in line with FIFA regulations, certain access routes around the stadium will be closed on match days and fans and visitors to the stadium and the V&A Waterfront are strongly encouraged to make use of public transport and Park-and-Ride options.

Spectator Zones: To enhance the World Cup experience for the anticipated 350,000 visitors to Cape Town during the football tournament, the V&A Waterfront has organised four prime-site Spectator Zones:

· Quay 4, diagonally opposite the Amphitheatre, will seat 400 spectators and will be open from 10am till 1am. Entrance is free and TV screens will be in place to view matches.

Wheel of Excellence: Another exciting attraction arriving at the end of May will be the Wheel of Excellence, a Waterfront exclusive for the World Cup. This will be fully illuminated giant observation wheel 50 metres in height, and featuring 36 fully enclosed luxury cabins that will treat visitors to a unique sightseeing opportunity; with spectacular views of the City as well as Table Mountain and Robben Island. It will be situated at the Canal site, opposite the Caltex Garage. The wheel will be fully operational from June 8 and will remain at the V&A Waterfront for an extended period after the World Cup matches. Ticket price to the Wheel of Excellence is R70 per person.

Safety and security: The Waterfront's CEO provided details of improvements in safety and security, cleaning, lighting, access routes and parking facilities, following comparative risk assessments based on valuable lessons learnt at the World Cup in Germany. "We have increased our security presence by 50% on match days and 25% on non-match days, to ensure we are covered to handle any unexpected eventualities. This includes employing additional full-time security personnel during the World Cup. All additional security personnel have worked with the area during the test match period, so are familiar with the site and proceedings. In addition, we have reviewed and updated the positioning of our 1000-plus CCTV cameras in all common areas" he said.

The new Information Centre (alongside Ferryman's Tavern on Dock Road) has been upgraded at a cost of R5,5 million, and aims to be the first stop to welcome local and international visitors to the V&A Waterfront. In addition to general tourist information, services include reservations for accommodation in Cape Town and tour bookings in and around the V&A Waterfront and surrounds.
