World Cup 2006 Preview - Saudi Arabia

Germany will mark Saudi Arabia's fourth successive appearance at the World Cup but they are still trying to emulate the success achieved in the 1994 finals. Their debut in the USA was extraordinary, beating Morocco 2-1 and then Belgium 1-0 to cement a place in the second round. Striker Saeed Owairan also scored that memorable solo goal against the Belgians.

Since then, Saudi Arabia have barely made their mark in the finals, for positive reasons, anyway. The 2002 finals saw them on the receiving end of an 8-0 drubbing against Germany in which Miroslav Klose scored five goals while they also finished bottom of their group in 1998. Since losing to Sweden in the last 16 in the 1994 finals, they have endured five defeats and one draw in six matches.

Perhaps the Saudi Arabian royal family had a point after all as football was banned in the kingdom until as recently as 1951.

Former Argentina international Gabriel Calderon will be keen to make amends after replacing Gerard van der Lem following the Saudi's poor showing at the 2004 Asian Cup. Saudi Arabia qualified unbeaten in 12 matches, including home and away victories over South Korea.

The side conceded just two goals in 12 matches, helped by highly rated goalkeeper Mabrouk Zaid who is regarded the best in Asia. He is a worthy replacement to Mohamed Al Deayea who recorded a World record 173 caps for his country and is keen on a move to Europe. He won't have a better shop window than in Germany.

The World Cup will be one final hurrah for veteran playmaker Sami Al Jaber. This will be his fourth tournament and he has represented his country for half of his 33 years. After netting on his debut in 1990, he became the first Asian player to score goals in two consecutive World Cups - scoring the winning goal against Morocco in 1994 to mark Saudi Arabia's first ever finals win and in the 2-2 draw against South Africa in 1998. Al Jaber, came out of retirement to assist with qualification and scored twice in the 3-0 win against Uzbekistan.

What is likely to prevent Saudi Arabia from qualifying from Group H is an overall lack of experience against top class opposition. Only Al Jaber in his short spell at Wolves during the 2000/01 season and Fahd Al Ghashayan during a spell at AZ Alkmaar have experience of European club football in the country's history.

Recommended Bet

The tournament will be a grand occasion to loyal servant Sami Al Jaber but it is likely to be an early exit for Saudi Arabia yet again. The most profitable bet could be for them to lose all three matches and finish bottom of the group. Big hitters will not be put off by the odds-on prices for both Spain and Ukraine.

FIFA World Cup Quarter-Final Preview - Argentina Vs Germany

Argentina and Germany have been arguably the most aggressively exciting teams at this World Cup, making this match at Cape Town on Friday, a mouth watering prospect.

In contrast to their qualifying campaign, Argentina have been on top of their game, whether passing, or retaining the ball or finishing.

After cruising through the group matches with easy wins over Nigeria, South Korea and Greece, Argentina ran into Mexico in the round of 16. Contrary to expectation, Mexico disappointed, and barring the first 10 minutes or so, Argentina ruled, with Tevez's twin strikes deciding the issue. Higuain also got his name on the scorecard thanks to a blunder by Osario.

Messi has been the creative hub, despite not scoring himself, and Tevez and Higuain have benefited. the midfield has been in capanble hands, led by Javier Mascherano, and Angel di Maria and Maxi Rodriguez have supplemented the attack whenever possible.

The back-line led by Martin Demichelis is the only weak area, with a goal gifted to the South Koreans a case in point. Concentration lapses have also occurred too often for comfort, such as towards the end of the Mexico game.

German youth overwhelmed English experience, 4-1, in their round of 16 match, the worst defeat england have suffered in any World Cup finals.

This was a repeat of their group match against Australia, but that was followed by a shock defeat to Serbia. But Germany soon erased the memory with a 1-0 win over Ghana in their last group game to top the group.

Germany have looked complete in every aspect: Per Mertesacker and Arne Friedrich in the back line, Sami Khedira filling in for Michael Ballack, Bastian Schweinsteiger champion in the midfield, Mesut Oezil the brightest spark of the tournament for Germany, Klose a man for big occasions, the list looks non-ending.In fact, Germany's biggest enemy against Argentina could be overconfidence.

Lionel Messi is undoubtedly the key for Argentina. Without his selfless team spirit, apart from his supreme ball skills, Tevez and Higuain wouldn't have been half as effective.

Mesut Oezil was unknown before the World Cup. Here is the star of the future; mature beyond his years, he uses his prodigious talent to devastating effect.

Maradona is unlikely to tinker with his starting eleven. He will rely on Demichelis and Burdisso to counter Klose.

Germany Manager Joachim Leow could also opt for an unchanged side from the one that played against England. Klose, at their spearhead, rely on support from Oezil, Mueller and Podolski. The defence will be led by Lahm who is an additional attacking option, and the back-line will have Freidrich and Mertesacker.

This is a game of classic contrast in that Argentina have individual stars who can rule a game on their day, and Germany have youngsters with talent and energy but lack experience, at these rarefied heights. This lack showed up for the 15 minutes leading up to half-time against Lampard and company in the Ehgland game. For me, the result of this match will revolve around the question: can Germany's inexperience can weather the Messi storm?

FIFA World Cup 2010: South Korea Vs Greece Preview

If you want to know who the most successful football team from Asia are, look no farther than South Korea. They have featured in all the world cups held since 1986.

In the 2002 World Cup that South Korea co-hosted with Japan, South Korea stunned the world, when they entered the semi-finals at the event.

Nearly a decade later, the Asian football giants will seek a rerun of that feat. But before that, they must get past the group stage, and their immediate stumbling block is Greece whom they will face on Saturday, at Port Elizabeth.

In 2006, South Korea failed to get past the group stage, and they will want to achieve at least that objective, this year.

The match against Greece could prove crucial in helping decide which of the two will accompany Argentina to the round of 16. With Nigeria the fourth team in the fray, this is one of the tougher groups, and an upset or two could liven things up.

Going strictly by current form, South Korea should pip both Greece and Nigeria to the second spot in the group. The Asian team went unbeaten through their qualification matches, and in warm ups to the event in South Africa have got the better of Japan, Ecuador and Ivory Coast.

And in a match against European champions Spain at Innsbruck, the Koreans came close to holding the Spaniards to a draw; Spain managed to eke out a 1-0 win on the back of a late goal in the 86th minute by Jesus Navas.

Greece have qualified for the event after a long gap of 16 years. Their 1994 campaign in USA ended on a tearful note after they were demolished in all three group matches, while conceding 10 goals.

Greece followed up on their shock win in Euro 2004 by not qualifying for World Cup 2006 and by failing to win a match at Euro 2008, as defending champions.

As in Euro 2004, the absence of expectation could work in Greece's favour in World Cup 2010, according to their German coach Otto Rehhagel. Greece will look to the fleet-footed Celtic striker Georgios Samaras to provide them the initiative. The World Cup is an opportunity for Samaras to prove his unfulfilled potential where it matters most.

South Korea captain, Ji-Sung Park, will bring his hyper energetic self to bear in midfield as he orchestrates his side's campaign, in South Africa. His experience with PSV Eindhoven and Manchester United should prove handy in seeing his side past the group stage.

In a closely fought must-win game for both sides, South Korea have the edge.

FIFA World Cup 2010 - New Zealand Vs Slovakia Preview

Rustenburg is the venue of this match of minnows New Zealand and Slovakia. This is only New Zealand's second World Cup appearance, and Slovakia's first big tournament. This match has academic importance at best for both teams, as Italy and Paraguay look likely to qualify from the group for the round of 16.

What New Zealand lack in skill they make up in discipline. Their recent form has not been encouraging. New Zealand had an easy ride in the qualifiers, winning 5 of 6 matches, and won a play off against Bahrain belying expectation. Star player Shane Smeltz  and Middlesborough striker Chris Killen are the men to watch in th NZ squad. Blackburn Rovers star, Ryan Nelson, holds fort in defence.

Marek Hamsik, 22, leads Slovakia, a newly independent country since 1993. Skipper Marek Hamsik burst into prominence thanks to his goal scoring ways with Napoli. The team has a Liverpool star in the making in Martin Skrtel. In recent months, although they lost to Norway, a draw against Cameroon and a convincing win against Costa Rica point to Slovakia's potential. Bolton Wanderer's Vladimir Weiss is the Slovakia coach's son, and a third pillar of the team.

Slovakia won 8 of 10 matches in a qualification group comprising the likes of Slovenia, Czech Republic, Northern Ireland, Poland and San Marino. So they are not likely to be fazed by the prospect of facing New Zealand, who are, if anything, weaker than the above teams.

In this battle of minnows, Slovakia hold an ever so slight edge.

FIFA World Cup 2010 - Germany Vs Serbia Preview

Each of Germany's 4 strikers got his name on the score sheet, in a 4-0 walloping of Australia, in their first match on June 13.

On Friday, Germany will play Serbia who lost 1-0 to Ghana in their opening match of group D.  Serbia and Germany have only met once before, the match going 2-1 in favour of Germany; at half time, though, Serbia led 1-0.

Three time World Cup winners, Germany have never failed to reach the quarter final from 1954 onwards. winning 8 out of 10 matches, they breezed through the qualifiers.

The German backs can expect a little more of a run against Serbia than they did against Australia.

In their second World Cup campaign after 2006, Serbia were unlucky not to take a point of Ghana, where apart from a couple of errors, which cost them a player, Lukovic, and a penalty, they gave as good as they got.

Much is expected from Nikola Zigic a towering striker; Serbia will be happy if midfielde Milos Krasic and Milan Jovanovic have another good outing against the Germans.
 
Skipper Dejan Stankovic had a forgettable match against Ghana, and will seek to lead more effectively to make the Germany match a little more even, for his team. With red-carded Lukovic out of the Serbian side, Neven Subotic is likely to get his chance. In his favour, Subotic's Borussia Dortmund experience means that he is familiar with the German players.

The Serbian back, Nemanja Vidic, will have to play out of his skin to hold the German front line in check; his primary focus should be on Miloslav Klose. Much of the credit fot their win against Australia must go to the vision and creativity of the midfielder trio of Oezil, Khedra and Schweinsteiger. Mesut Oezil had a hand in 2 of the 4 goals scored.

German coach Joachim Loew will be averse to changing a winning team. Cacau may come in as substitute, in the last third.

The Germans should take this game, comfortably although Serbia should give a better account of themselves than Australia.

Sources said that Ferdinand had been sent for a scan after a recurrence of the groin problem he sustained at the end of last season and was ruled out of key England games against Brazil and Estonia.
