Oscar Perez Rojas was born on February 1, 1973. As the most senior member of the squad's pool of goalkeepers, he has the most experience in terms of club football matches and international caps. The 37-year-old custodian of Mexico's goal has had a long standing history of superb performances. Due to his agility and ability for a quick spring, he was nicknamed El Conejo or "The Rabbit", aside from his incredible presence inside the penalty box.
He began his professional career with Cruz Azul as a substitute in 1991. It was not until 1993 when he made his first professional debut for the club where he protected his goal resulting to a goalless draw. After that, he became the club's starting goalkeeper for many years and starred in the 1997 campaign in the Invierno Final where his team won over Leon by a score of 2-1. He had been honored by the club as one of the longest-tenured players with 413 impressive appearances for them. In the 2008-09 season, he was sent on loan to the UANL Tigres where he was also as impressive as ever conceding the least number of goals in the Apertura tournament. Currently, he is again on loan to Jaguares de Chiapas where even at his late age is still considered the top goalkeeper of the Mexican soccer club.
He was labeled as the best goalkeeper of the Mexico national team from 1998 to 2002 where he started in all of their international matches and minded his country's goal during the 2002 Korea/Japan World Cup. However, he was left out of the national squad for the 2006 World Cup when their coach left.
He was reinstated for active international duty during the qualifying stages for the 2010 World Cup and helped his squad reach South Africa. He continued his consistent play in Johannesburg when his team fought the host South Africa to a 1 - 1 draw in the opening match. His mastery of the goal was very evident when he kept a clean sheet during their 2-0 win over previous runner-up France. He also started against Uruguay where they lost narrow score of 1-0. His impressive performances during the group stages again earned him the starting spot for their Round of 16 game against Argentina where they were eventually eliminated following a heartbreaking 3 - 1 loss.
With 54 international caps under his belt, he is clearly the most experienced member of his country's representatives in international soccer. At a time when new and young talents are being integrated into the team, he has shown steady and consistent performances and impressive composure which had helped him maintain his starting role. His rabbit-like agility together with a mental toughness brought about by 17 years of preparation and training had made him an icon in Mexico's long soccer history.
